Structured Cabling

Structured cabling is a standardized cabling system for data and telephony, planned independently of the devices later connected to it.
Structured cabling organizes all data and telephone lines in a building according to a single, standardized scheme, typically based on standards such as ISO/IEC 11801, instead of running a separate custom solution for every device. The goal is that any wall outlet can serve a PC, a printer, a camera, or a Wi-Fi access point equally well, regardless of what is plugged into it today or in five years.
In practice, a continuous cable runs from every network outlet to a central patch panel in the server rack, where it is connected to a switch with a short patch cable as needed. Every outlet and every patch panel port carries a unique, documented label, so any line in the building can be traced without guesswork.
A common misunderstanding is that structured cabling always means tearing out and replacing everything. Existing cabling can often be brought into a proper system through documentation, labeling, and a central patch panel alone. Without documentation, though, even freshly installed cable becomes hard to trace once something goes wrong.
What it means in practice
In businesses that have grown organically, missing structured cabling shows up as unlabeled cables running across the server room that have to be traced by hand for every change. A properly built system saves time on every expansion or fault search and reduces the risk of unplugging the wrong line.
