Patch Panel

A patch panel is a fixed panel of ports in the server rack where all of a building's permanently installed network cables terminate in one place.
A patch panel brings the ends of every permanently installed network cable in a building together at one central point in the server rack, usually a 19-inch panel with 24 or 48 ports. It separates the permanent building cabling from the flexible connection to the switch, so changes happen on a short patch cable in the rack rather than on the cable inside the wall.
In practice, a short patch cable runs from each port to the desired switch port, so which device gets which port can be changed in minutes. Every port carries a number or label that matches the documentation and can be traced back to the corresponding outlet in the building.
A patch panel is sometimes confused with a switch: it has no electronics of its own and switches nothing, it is purely cabling. Another common mistake is an unlabeled patch panel, where every change requires tediously testing cables one by one to find out where they lead.
What it means in practice
Without a clearly labeled patch panel, every re-cabling job turns into a search, and outages take longer to fix because it first has to be worked out which cable belongs to which outlet. NDVDL builds these patch panels with full documentation as a standard part of server room projects.
