ONVIF

ONVIF defines a shared protocol for how an IP camera reports its capabilities, how video and audio streams are retrieved, and how basic functions like pan, zoom, or events are exchanged. Without a standard like this, every combination of camera brand and recording software would need dedicated support. ONVIF was originally developed jointly by several major manufacturers specifically to avoid that problem.

In practice, you spot ONVIF support by a listed profile in the spec sheet, such as Profile S for video streaming or Profile T for extended functions. When setting up, an ONVIF-compatible camera can be found and added through a device discovery scan in the NVR or VMS software instead of manual, vendor-specific configuration. That makes it much easier to combine cameras from different manufacturers in one system.

One edge case worth knowing: ONVIF compatibility doesn't mean every feature of a camera is usable. Vendor-specific extras such as certain AI analytics often only run through the manufacturer's own software and aren't exposed through ONVIF at all, or only in a limited form. Anyone relying purely on the ONVIF logo when buying should still check which specific functions actually work together with their own NVR.
